WRO College Category Game – FAQ

WRO College Category Game – FAQ

NOTE: THESE ARE UPDATES FROM THE 2013 GAME. Please refer to the latest game FAQ for the year you are participating.

newmarkQ.Do we have to build the robot at the WRO competition or can we bring the robot pre-built?

A. Due to the complexity of the College Category Games teams can pre-build their robots before the competition.

newmarkQ.What will happen if the robot doesn’t find its way to the finish tile before the 5 min end? (total points = 0? no time bonus? penalty?)

A. You will not get the time bonus. Your round is still considered valid and complete at the end of the 5 minutes. Your robot is free to remain on the field and work on scoring until the round time runs out.

newmarkQ. Are we allowed to cut one end of two cables and then solder them together?

A. No, I am afraid not. All electronics and LEGO should remain in their original form.

newmarkQ. How many balls are we allowed to give back to a single waypoint? Is there a limit?

A.  No, there isn’t a limit to the number of balls you can drop into a single waypoint.

newfollowupmarkQ. Are we allowed to (by hand) remove balls from the waypoint to make space for new balls (and still get points)?

A.  You aren’t allowed to remove the balls but we will have a game official do so if needed. You will get points for each ball you deliver to a hopper at a waypoint regardless of capacity.

Q. In the general rules, Section III, Line (h.) it states, “Robots may only carry up to 3 balls at any one time.” What does “carry” mean exactly?

A. Carry” in this instance means your robot can only have 3 balls on it when moving a distance on the playing field, be it within a Waypoint tile or on its way to another Waypoint or destination on the playing field.

Q. Does this mean I can “CARRY” more than 3 balls as long as the robot is STATIONARY (NOT moving) from it’s place?

A. Yes, if your robot is not moving on the field it can hold, eat, consume, pass through, launch, sort, bounce, spin, or juggle as many balls as it wants. Internal mechanisms can move but the robot may not move from the point where it picks up the balls. Moving on the field with more than 3 balls on top of, inside, in front of, behind, or to the side of the robot would be considering “carrying more than 3” and be grounds for disqualification. No points for juggling the balls but I will be impressed.

Q. Can we use glue, a hot glue gun, or tape to fasten parts to our robot?

A.  No, I’m afraid we do not allow adhesives, tape or hot glue for part fastening. We only allow fasteners from the official kits of parts.

Q. Does the black tape go across one or both of the yellow center tiles?

A.  The black tape goes across both of the yellow tiles.

Q. How many balls are we allowed to give back to a single waypoint? Is there a limit?

A.  No, there isn’t a limit to the number of balls you can drop into a single waypoint.

Q. Will the playground area be an electromagnetic free zone? In other words, will compass sensors work properly?

A. Yes, that is the goal. We have spoken to the national organizers in Jakarta about the need for a electromagnetic free area to play the game in.

Q .What color are the tiles of Waypoints 2 & 3? The tiles are different in the rules documents and video.

A. The official tile color of  Waypoint 2 is purple. The official color of Waypoint 3 is lime green. We apologize for the mix-up. Regardless of “official colors” you will have time to calibrate your sensors on the official playing field before game play begins.

Q. Does the robot have to use the intended mechanism at each Waypoint to dispense balls?

A. No, however you may not damage or move the Waypoint from its intended position in any way. Any deliberate action to do so as determined by the referee will be grounds for disqualification.

Q. The rules state that the robot can be a maximum size of 30cm wide x 30cm deep at the start of the round. Is there a maximum height?

A. No. :)

Q. Can the robot leave behind any piece of itself on the playing field during the round?

A. No. :(  See Section III, Line (e.) for more details.

Q. In the general rules, Section V, Line (d) it says, “Each Hopper will be of a different size and height. ” What are the heights?

A. This is a rule we intended to take out. All the Waypoints are exactly the same except for the dispensing mechanism. However, it might be foreshadowing of a rule to come for future seasons.
